How Hemp Can Save the Planet

Hemp is one of the most sustainable and versatile substances on the planet, one that played a primary role in the development of human society. Did you know the first American flag was made with hemp? Hemp has been used to feed us, clothe us, house us, and heal us, for thousands of years until it was banned in 1937. Before then, it was a common crop used for the manufacturing of fabrics, housing, medicine, and food. Hemp was a substantial competitor to the paper production and synthetic plastics industry because it could make these products sustainably without pollution. When marijuana prohibition began, hemp was included too and the industry vanished.

"Hemp: the only plant that can feed you, house you, clothe you, and heal you."

Hemp is a plant from the Cannabaceae or Cannabis family of plants, and distinctly different from the Marijuana species. Hemp only contains 0.3%-1.5% THC, meaning it is not mind-altering and is legal in all 50 states. CBD, or Cannabidiol, is an oil extracted from the hemp flower and is now being widely applied for its medicinal healing properties and offers an alternative or supplement to traditional treatments for illness.

What can hemp do?

Hemp has the potential to overtake corporate industries because is it so clean and widely applicable to many industries. It is fast-growing and outcompetes other plants in the area, reducing the need for herbicides. You can make paper from hemp with 1/4 the land use compared to traditional deforestation methods that are depleting our terrestrial carbon sinks and habitats.

With the fashion industry being the second largest contributor to environmental pollution, many companies that care for the planet are turning back to hemp for fabrics. Cotton requires double the amount of water, and 2-3 times the amount of land to create the same amount of fabric. In China, hemp has been used for over a decade to create textiles over cotton and has grown to be a 200 million dollar industry. In Europe, farmers are subsidized $400 an acre to switch to this alternative, sustainable crop.

What can CBD do?

CBD products offer a natural alternative way to heal physical setbacks. CBD is used to help with anxiety disorders, depression, chronic pain, sleep disorders, as well as promotes joint support, immune system support, digestive health, cognitive function, and focus. It serves as an anti-inflammatory, cancer-reducing agent as well as a pain reliever. Depending on the way the CBD is processed, it can relax your body or enhance activity. It is patented by the U.S. as an antioxidant and neuroprotectant, meaning it can also be applied to neurodegenerative illnesses like dementia and strokes. This means that increased growth of the hemp industry will also help alleviate the current health crisis in addition to protecting our planet.

What can I do?

The good news is that hemp is fully legal, and the economy is familiar with the large hemp industry that existed before 1937. If we want to address the global environmental crisis, we need to adapt immediately. The hemp plant can be used to manufacture goods to replace synthetic, unsustainable products that dominate our economic market. We must show a consumer demand for sustainably sourced products if we want the market to respond. Using your dollar as your voice is one of the most effective ways to enact change in our capitalistic society.

The Hemp and CBD industry has been overshadowed by marijuana as it become legalized. This is such a shame, considering it has the potential to overtake the most environmentally destructive corporations in the world. It can replace paper that is currently manufactured through deforestation. It can replace plastic, which is the most destructive and wasteful polluter to our earth. It can replace fuel, and help us reduce our dependence on finite oil. It can replace fabrics, which are currently made of synthetic microfibers that shed off by the thousands during the washing process and further pollute our oceans.

The hemp industry is slowly growing, but it still waiting to be harnessed to its fullest potential. I want to live in a world without plastic, habitat loss, fast fashion, cancer, pollution, and pain. The hemp plant helps solve all of these problems in the most sustainable way. No other resource has been so widely applied across industries other than oil, and hemp is actually good for the environment and can be grown over and over. It is no shock to me that something grown from the earth has the potential to heal the earth.

So, now we know that hemp can save the planet. But will it? Ironically enough, its actually up to you.
